Kid-Proofing Your Home

Happy Grandparent Appreciation Day! Your little grandkids are on their way to visit, and you’re eager to spend some quality time with them. However, if you’re retired, your home might not be fully equipped for young children. But don’t worry! With a few quick and easy steps, you can make your home safe and fun for your grandkids. Here’s how to kid-proof your home :

Secure hazardous items: Children are naturally curious, so it’s essential to secure any hazardous items. Store medications and cleaning supplies in locked cabinets. Keep knives, scissors, and other sharp tools out of reach. And if you have fragile items, consider putting them on higher shelves or storing them for the duration of your grandchildren’s visit.

Cover electrical outlets: Little fingers love to explore, and electrical outlets can be very tempting. According to the Electrical Safety Foundation, each year more than 2,400 kids are injured by sticking metal objects into electrical outlets. Use outlet covers or safety plugs to prevent any accidents.

Block off dangerous areas: If there are rooms or areas that might be unsafe for kids, consider blocking them off. Baby gates are perfect for this and can be quickly set up and taken down. Many of our homes feature beautiful electric fireplaces. While these are not typically hot to the touch, to be extra safe you may want to use a cover or fireplace gate while small children are in the room.

Cushion sharp corners: Many of us have scars from our adventurous childhoods. Help your grandkids avoid the scars of childhood by using corner guards or cushioned bumpers on coffee tables, end tables, and other sharp-edged furniture.

Secure cords and wires: Loose cords and wires can be a tripping hazard or a source of electrical danger. Secure them with cord organizers or clips to keep them out of reach and neatly tucked away where they can’t be yanked or chewed on.

Set up a play area: Create a designated play area where your grandkids can have fun safely. Lay down a soft rug or blanket and bring out some toys. This not only keeps them entertained but also helps contain the mess.

Lock windows and doors: Ensure that all windows are securely locked. If you have a patio or balcony, keep the doors locked when not in use.

Check for small objects: Small objects like coins, buttons, or batteries can be a choking hazard. Do a quick sweep of the floors and low surfaces to remove any small items that could be within reach. That includes bowls of pet food, which may be tempting for tiny hands.

Test smoke detectors: Make sure your smoke detectors are working correctly. While this isn’t exclusive to kid-proofing, it’s always good practice to ensure your home is safe for all its inhabitants.

Have a first aid kit handy: Accidents can happen, so it’s always good to be prepared. Keep a first aid kit in an easily accessible spot with band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and other basic supplies. Because a fever is often the first sign of illness in children, having an accurate touchless thermometer on hand is a smart move.

By taking these simple steps, you can ensure that your home is a safe and welcoming environment for your grandkids. Now you can relax and enjoy Grandparent Appreciation Day with your loved ones!
